Membre d'un peuple nomade (en voie de sédentarisation) de l'Asie centrale, d'origine turque. Le matériel que le Kirghiz a créé à l'usage de sa vie de déplacements périodiques, la forme de sa tente, de ses vêtements, réalisent un ensemble où tout se tient (VIDAL DE LA BL., Géogr. hum., 1921, p. 201).
— Emploi adj. Qui concerne, qui est relatif aux Kirghiz, à la région habitée par les Kirghiz. Idole, montagne, pâtre, steppe kirghiz(e). Le matériel des pasteurs kirghiz, tentes de feutre, lanières de cuir, cordes de laine, tapis et vêtements, ustensiles, est entièrement emprunté au bétail qui constitue la richesse (VIDAL DE LA BL., Géogr. hum., 1921p. 130).
— Subst. masc. sing. Dialecte turc. Le kirghiz (..) parlé en Kirghizie et dans tous les États soviétiques de la frontière russo-chinoise ainsi qu'au Sin-Kiang chinois et dans le Nord de l'Afghanistan (VERGUIN, La Situation linguistique du monde contemporain, 1968, p. 1117 ds Langage, 1968, p. 1525).
